Developing a Culture of Success

Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.
John Wooden

This was the second point I listed in the last blog and it is very important.

What is it and how will we develop it with Kavanagh Football?

A culture of success is no accident though synergies and unexpected benefits tend to follow. it is planned in as much as those involved are careful to make sure the right ingredients are added in the right quantities. This can include:

  • Skills
  • Attitude
  • Plans for the whole season
  • The right support
  • Great communication with the team, community and officials
  • a belief in the team and what we are doing (this one is big)
There are certainly others but let me touch on belief in the team and what we are involved in.
Nothing is achieved without belief, you must know and expect the best. In the recent racing world champs NZ achieved a mixed bag of results. SOme golds, silver, bronze and lower placings. In listening to the commentary and interviews, almost every result was expected. Why or how?

Because the training and preparation was so good and planned that they could predict within seconds where they would place and this made up part of their season plan.

Another story is a winning season I had with Mosgiel in 1996. We had been together 3 years (maybe 4) and the expectation at each training was "this is how a championship team trains", this is how we prepare etc. We expected to win, not from magic or hope, but by our commitment and preparations.

How will we do it?

Culture means the way we do what we do and the 'why' we do it a certain way.
By planning to build team, communicate clear and motivating expectations, by looking to involved more of the community, and calling ourselves and each other accountable to giving our best every time.

Believe it is possible, know we are not alone, expect the best, prepare with hard work, and at all times, apply a positive attitude tot he task at hand.

Looking forward to next season!
